Lien Boon Hua, Music Director
I GRADUATED... With a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in 2011, and a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music in 2013.
I STARTED CONDUCTING... In my secondary school days, but I was never serious enough to pursue it. It was only in the last year of my undergraduate studies where I spent a semester as an exchange student at the Peabody Conservatory that the conducting bug bit me, and I haven’t looked back since.
MY FAVOURITE MOMENT WITH ORCHESTRA COLLECTIVE WAS... Every single one that I’m with them, be it on or off the podium. They’re a remarkable group of musicians with incredible energy and enthusiasm, and I truly cherish the strong bond that we share.
CURRENTLY, I AM... Working on further studies in Orchestral Conducting at the Eastman School of Music.
IF I HAD AN EXTRA HOUR PER DAY, I WOULD... Sit back and enjoy life… But only if I was productive that day, or else it’s back to my desk to study more music!
I HANG OUT AT... The practice rooms in school perhaps a bit too much.
OTHER THAN MUSIC, I ALSO ENJOY... great food, great conversations and travelling (because it’s always great anyway).
WHAT GIVES ME INSPIRATION ARE... So many things in life! I think we all can find inspiration all around us if we look carefully and not take anything for granted.
I HOPE THAT SINGAPORE IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS... Will be a happier society where people will have more leisure time to enjoy the arts and recognize the tremendous enrichment it can bring to our lives.
MY ADVICE FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS… Work as hard as you can, seek out the best mentors you can find, and don’t forget to enjoy the journey. Be open to new ideas too because you never know where it will bring you!
